Kid’s Guide To Emergency Services
Introduction
Emergency services help to protect us every day in a variety of ways. The men and women who work for emergency services
have responsibilities to help the public avoid, discover, and report emergencies quickly and properly. Without emergency
services such as the police, fire and rescue, emergency medical service (or EMS), the Coast Guard, wildfire prevention,
Hazmat, and others, we would live in an unsafe world. The people who help to protect and rescue us from daily hazards are
very important members of our communities who should be respected.
Police
The responsibility of the police is to provide safety for communities and to protect the safety of individuals. A policeman
upholds the law, helps to protect personal property, and maintains order. They can also help children who are lost to find
their parents. The job of the policeman can be dangerous, as they are faced with unpredictable situations daily. The policeman
puts his or her own safety at risk every day in order to protect us. They may work in police stations and are a visible,
peace-keeping presence in our communities.

an accident or disaster. They help to rescue us when we’re sick or hurt. EMS personnel must be trained in life-saving
techniques such as CPR and first aid. They must know how to deal with a variety of medical emergencies, from a car accident
to a heart attack. During an emergency, when you dial 911 (or your local emergency number), the EMS are usually the people
