Kid’s Guide To Emergency Services

Introduction

Emergency services help to protect us every day in a variety of ways. The men and women who work for emergency services have responsibilities to help the public avoid, discover, and report emergencies quickly and properly. Without emergency services such as the police, fire and rescue, emergency medical service (or EMS), the Coast Guard, wildfire prevention, Hazmat, and others, we would live in an unsafe world. The people who help to protect and rescue us from daily hazards are very important members of our communities who should be respected.

Police

The responsibility of the police is to provide safety for communities and to protect the safety of individuals. A policeman upholds the law, helps to protect personal property, and maintains order. They can also help children who are lost to find their parents. The job of the policeman can be dangerous, as they are faced with unpredictable situations daily. The policeman puts his or her own safety at risk every day in order to protect us. They may work in police stations and are a visible, peace-keeping presence in our communities.

Fire and Rescue

Those who work in fire and rescue have very important jobs. They include firefighters, who help to fight fires. Firefighters do more than just fight fires, however. They also rescue people and animals who are trapped in burning automobiles and buildings. Another job of the firefighter is to provide educational programs for kids on the dangers of fire, fire prevention and fire safety. Firefighters aren’t just there to rescue us from fires and fight fires – they also want to help us to prevent them in the first place, and to teach us what to do if we’re ever caught in a fire.

EMS

EMS or Emergency Medical Services personnel are the people who are riding on the ambulance that is called to the scene of an accident or disaster. They help to rescue us when we’re sick or hurt. EMS personnel must be trained in life-saving techniques such as CPR and first aid. They must know how to deal with a variety of medical emergencies, from a car accident to a heart attack. During an emergency, when you dial 911 (or your local emergency number), the EMS are usually the people who respond to your emergency. In addition to providing medical care, the EMS also transports the sick and injured to hospitals and other medical facilities where they can receive further treatment.
